Author-Illustrator of Children’s Books

Do you have an idea for a children’s book? Instructor, Author/Illustrator Maryann Cocca-Leffler has spent her 30 year career as an author and illustrator, developing and selling children’s books to publishers, while acting as her own agent.  In this workshop you will learn how an idea turns into a children's book. You will hear and see the process a book takes to be published through ideas, written drafts, dummies, rejections, revisions, more rejections, more revisions, storyboards, sketches and final art. Are you a writer, but not an artist? Maryann will explain the formula for a good story and how to go about submitting your story to a publisher. She will discuss different genres so you’ll get an idea of where your story might fit. She’ll explain the business side of the children's book industry including finding the right publisher, contacting editors & agents, writing queries, submitting a manuscript, contracts, royalties, rights and sub rights.  She’ll discuss the pros and cons of self-publishing, give tips on marketing and provide links to industry resources, which will help you navigate the competitive world of children's book publishing.
